Godfrey Lado is one of the main South Sudanese composers and poets of this time. Being a refugee of war clearly manifests itself in his work. In his poems and music he translates his own experiences and the history of his country with an honest energy bringing you closer to the refugee’s reality. After all, it could have happened to us as well.
Today, stories are an intrinsic part of our societies and culture. Movies, books, music, news media, religions, architecture and painting, you name it, and the influence of storytelling is to be seen in all aspects of our life. Defining our values, desires, dreams and, as well as our prejudices and hatreds etc.
The storytelling history is quite ancient, the earliest known record in the origin of storytelling can be found in the Egypt. In fact, it is believed by most historians and psychologists that storytelling is one of the many things that define and bind our humanity.
Inspired by this ancient trend of oral history the South Sudanese born artist Godfrey Lado narrates the story of the South Sudan in Spoken Word poetry, and songs.
Godfrey`s mission besides informing, is that of creating a new image for the generations long war torn South Sudan. By focusing on the rich cultural heritage, Godfrey believes the focus on the positive energy will eventually take over the negative.
